Purpose Driven Life, Day 27

Day 27: Defeating Temptation – If you’re struggling with temptation, this is the chapter to read. Defeating temptation is something that takes practice, it’s not easy and sometimes gets the best of us. One thing to remember is God will never give us anything we can’t handle, however, we must do our part in defeating temptation using the biblical principles given to us.

This chapter gives us four key points when it comes to defeating temptation:

Refocus your attention on something else – When we find ourselves in a place of temptation we must quickly refocus our attention and leave the situation or change our train of thought. By trying to block out a thought we’re actually driving it deeper into our memories…we need to just stop thinking about it all together. Set your focus on God and ask God for help when you find yourself in a tempting situation.

Reveal your struggle to a godly friend or support group – Don’t think you have to struggle with temptation on your own, as a matter of fact that’s the worse thing we can do. Share this with a friend who can pray for you, and help you defeat your temptation.

Resist the Devil – By resisting the devil and fighting back his temptations, he flees from us. We must resist the devil by arming ourselves with the word of God . We are told to memorize scriptures of this very purpose, no matter where we are we can resist the Devil by fighting back with the truth of God – his word!

Realize your vulnerability You know what your temptations are, do yourself a favour…don’t place yourself in tempting situations. I know from experience that this can be very hard to do…however, I also know from experience that it’s not impossible to do.

Question of the day: Who could I ask to be a spiritual partner to help me defeat a persistent temptation by praying for me?

Thankfully, I have been blessed with a few really wonderful people who I can turn to. It’s sometimes hard to find that one person that you can go to and not feel like you’re going to be judged based on what you’re dealing with. I have one girlfriend in particular that I can go to if needed, we’ve shard so much over the last few years, I know that she is always ready and willing to pray any demon away.

Who do you have as a spiritual partner?

Learning to live in the moment,

Shar
